When Pema Chopel was five years old, his father passed away. His family had very much difficulties after his father died. His mother was able to send him to elementary school, however after elementary school, his mother could not afford to continue paying for his education. Because of this, his mother consulted with Sengdruk Taktse School and informed them of their situation, and Pema Chopel was enrolled in Sengdruk Taktse School in 2008.
